Charles O'Neil describes life aboard the gunboat Cincinnati and the progress of the war along the Mississippi River. A. F. O'Neil describes two weeks of service aboard the U.S.S. Tioga on a cruise to the Bermuda Islands, the Bahama Islands, and Cuba, discussing Union and Confederate sympathy in Bermuda, relations with British authorities, and the city of Havana, Cuba.

John Tettemer O'Neil was born on July 25, 1913, in Henderson, North Carolina. He received a Bachelor of Science from the University of North Carolina in 1934 and a Master of Business Administration from the Harvard University Graduate School of Business in 1936. O'Neil worked on his doctoral degree at Northwestern from 1940 to 1943 and served in the army during 1944 and 1945.
